A ₹1,500 saree order turned into a ₹1.19 lakh online shopping scam!

A woman in Pune reportedly found a saree she liked on Instagram and contacted the seller on WhatsApp to place her order. After making the payment, the seller claimed the money had not been received and asked her to pay another ₹40, promising a refund.

What happened next? The woman was allegedly convinced to make 13 transactions totalling approximately ₹1,19,209. The seller also reportedly demanded another ₹16,706 in the name of GST.

Realising she might be a victim of cyber fraud, she approached the police. According to the reported case, Sections 318(4), 316(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) were invoked.

This incident is a reminder to stay alert while shopping through Instagram pages and WhatsApp sellers.

What should you do if you become a victim of online payment fraud?

Save screenshots, chats, payment receipts and other evidence.

Call 1930, India's cybercrime helpline.

Report the incident at https://cybercrime.gov.in/

Immediately inform your bank and report the fraudulent transactions.

Remember: Never make repeated payments just because a seller claims the previous payment failed. Verify the transaction with your bank or payment app first.

A local viewer says a scam left her with a nearly $700 AT&T cell phone bill before ABC10’s 10 On Your Side stepped in to help. Angelia Leavy says someone posing as an AT&T representative accessed her account using detailed personal information and added two additional phones, dramatically increasing her monthly charges. After months of calls and emails to AT&T without resolution, Leavy contacted 10 On Your Side. Within days of ABC10’s involvement, the issue was resolved. AT&T said it worked with the customer and urged people to stay vigilant, noting it will never ask for a one-time security PIN. The case highlights ongoing concerns about cell phone fraud and the role of consumer advocates in resolving billing disputes.
